The Orinoquía Region Takes Center Stage in Colombia’s National Agenda

On April 10 and 11, the First National Meeting for the Orinoquía Region will be held in Bogotá, placing this vital region at the heart of Colombia’s national development agenda. Organized by Prorinoquia, the Chambers of Commerce of Bogotá, Arauca, Casanare, San José del Guaviare, and Villavicencio, along with Arteaga Latam, and in alliance with the Private Council for Competitiveness, Fedesarrollo, Fedepalma, the Governors of Arauca, Casanare, Vichada, Meta, Guaviare, and Riopaila Castilla—with support from public, private, and civil society partners—this event marks the beginning of a new narrative that recognizes the Orinoquía as a national priority for competitiveness, environmental sustainability, and food and energy security.

Bogotá, March 18, 2025. The Orinoquía, which comprises 22% of Colombia’s territory but only 4% of its population (DANE, 2025), is a region of contrasts and unparalleled opportunities. It is a powerhouse of agribusiness, energy, and environmental potential, known for its fertile lands, strategic resources, and biodiversity—key assets for Colombia’s food and economic security.

The First National Meeting for the Orinoquía will take place on April 10 and 11, 2025, at the Salitre headquarters of the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce. It will serve as a platform for shaping a forward-looking development agenda aligned with national priorities and focused on unlocking the region’s full potential.

The Orinoquía: Colombia’s Food Security Powerhouse

By 2023, the Orinoquía region had approximately 1 million hectares of cultivated agricultural land, producing 97% of the country’s soy and cashew, 48% of its rice, 45% of its oil palm, 15% of its cacao, and 29% of its plantain. It is also home to 21% of the national cattle herd.

The region also guarantees Colombia’s energy security, accounting for 77% of the country’s oil production and 26% of its biodiesel output. Additionally, it holds vast potential for renewable energy development, positioning itself as a key player in Colombia’s energy transition.

Moreover, the Orinoquía is one of the regions with the greatest potential for tourism growth, with a 36% increase in the past 11 years.

Despite these advantages, the Orinoquía has remained largely absent from national discourse. Therefore, this meeting is not just a forum for discussion but a platform for action and the development of concrete solutions grounded in research by Fedesarrollo, the Private Council for Competitiveness, and initiatives led by Pacto Orinoquia.

The event will bring together governors, business leaders, private sector representatives, and civil society organizations from across the country.

A Commitment to Sustainability

The event will also feature the launch of the Sustainability Ranking, an initiative by the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce that will recognize the most outstanding companies and projects for their environmental, social, and economic sustainability efforts.

Networking spaces will be available throughout the event to foster strategic partnerships among businesses, civil society organizations, international cooperation agencies, embassies, and government institutions—creating concrete opportunities to drive the integral development of the Orinoquía.

We call on all entrepreneurs, investors, and leaders to participate in this unprecedented gathering.
